A Canadian contractor files his first 1040-NR with a W-7 attached

I needed the number to file a 1040-NR by the deadline. They filed the W-7 together with the return so nothing was late.

Background

Daniel spent four months on-site with a client in Seattle and earned U.S.-source wages that required a non-resident return. Without an SSN or ITIN the return could not be filed, and the filing deadline was seven weeks away.

What we did

When an ITIN is needed to file a return, the W-7 and the return travel together. We prepared the 1040-NR, completed the W-7 under the return-filing reason, and verified Daniel’s passport on video from Vancouver.

Because the package was filed by the deadline, the return counted as on time even though the ITIN had not yet been issued.

Outcome

The ITIN was issued in eleven weeks and the return was processed with it. Daniel’s refund of over-withheld tax followed a month later.
